Playful South African Boy
My painting is an honest and raw depiction of a young, South African orphan that I recently worked with. The painting is a mixed media work with a collage of newspapers, a layer of wood stain, and a charcoal drawing and oil painting atop that foundation. The work looks to capture the playful, yet hardened emotion of this young boy. So often I have seen paintings depicting the hardships and the struggles of boys such as these, which can be incredibly powerful. Yet at the same time, I also wanted to capture this boy’s fun-loving and human side. The boy’s playful expression and position offers a lightness to the work, while parts of the painting are left less worked to give it a raw feeling. My ultimate goal is to share the less appreciated and more human side of this young boy.
