FROM THE ARTIST: I composed “Ain’t I A Woman”, which takes its title from Sojourner Truth’s historic speech at the 1851 Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, in honor of Truth and the many unsung heroines of the Civil Rights movement, including Septima Clark, Fannie Lou Hamer, Mary Bethune Cook, Daisy Bates and Dr. Pauli Murray, among many others. Their fierce advocacy for the rights of the oppressed are deserving of wider recognition. The musicians in my all-woman band for this CD, “Momentum – Portraits of Women in Motion” include Tia Fuller, alto sax; Virgina Mayhew, tenor sax; Lisa Parrott, baritone sax; Ingrid Jensen, trumpet; Melissa Gardiner, trombone; Marion Hayden, bass; Allison Miller, drums and myself on piano.
