About the DEI Summit
The 2022 DEI Summit Community Assembly and Discussion will move us forward in our two-year transition from the university’s first five-year DEI Strategic Plan, DEI 1.0 to DEI 2.0. This year’s summit will be an opportunity to reflect on the insights gathered during the evaluation year, which is the first year of our two-year transition to DEI 2.0. This event also serves as a launching pad for our second year of transition, the planning year.
The DEI Summit Community Assembly and Discussion on October 12 will provide an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to engage with the DEI initiative. This event will replenish and energize our collective commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and inspire connectivity.
This year’s theme, DEI: Nurturing the Heart, Mind and Soul, explores the role of the arts in supporting our humanity (heart), mental health and wellness (mind), and religious/spiritual diversity (soul). These topics are distinct and interconnected, as each addresses components of self-identity and influence in the world. Additionally, as we reflect on our experiences navigating a global pandemic and the social justice issues that were illuminated over the past two and a half years, this theme assembles some important aspects of our coping toolkit.
The 2022 DEI Summit Community Assembly & Discussion will be back in-person for the first time after two years of virtual programming. The event will also be livestreamed, but we encourage you to join us in-person attendance for special surprises.

Parallel Pandemic: Addressing Structural Racism in the Age of COVID-19
October 11, 2021
Year Five of our DEI Strategic Plan was marked by two focal points, the COVID-19 pandemic and anti-racism efforts in response to the killing of George Floyd. COVID-19’s disparate impact on communities of color revealed how structural racism has caused a historical lack of resources and inequitable treatment. While the murder of George Floyd sparked national outrage that demanded an examination of how structural racism is linked to policing and America’s justice system.
Although racism has plagued our country since its inception, systemic and institutional racism that continues to impact our society came to the forefront as a challenge concurrent to the pandemic. While each is separate and uniquely complex, the interwoven nature of COVID-19 and structural racism underscores the reality that if we are to solve either of these issues we must address them both.
YEAR 4
Arts+Social Change: Building an Anti-Racist World through the Arts
October 26, 2020
This year’s summit provides a time and space for the campus community to come together to demonstrate a collective commitment to anti-racism that this moment in our history compels. During the fall term Democracy & Debate theme semester, the DEI Summit will focus on the arts as a vehicle for social change and provides an opportunity for curricular integration and connection. Both the theme semester and the Summit confirm our civic engagement values and demonstrate the power of each voice – both at the ballot box and through creative expression.

Student Advisory Planning Group (SAPG)
Members of the Student Advisory Planning Group (SAPG) provide valuable insight, perspectives, and feedback on all aspects of our Summit planning process, including theme development, program content, and marketing and outreach. This year’s SAPG is facilitated by Tyne Lucas, ODEI Program Manager. We thank the SAPG for the important role they play in producing our DEI Summit Community Assembly and Discussion.
